my musical taste

I have recently been preoccupied with a New Year’s resolution: completely ripping my entire CD collection. Jen is now completely sick of the little “bee doo dee” sound iTunes makes when a CD is finished. I am glad to be almost done with this process, it’s pretty much a pain in the butt — the time it takes to rip a CD is not quite short enough to just wait for each one to finish, but it’s too short to actually switch mental gears and do something else!

However, one thing that has been nice is that it has reintroduced me to music I have that I love, but really haven’t listened to, simply because it’s easier to listen to the subset I already had on my PC.

Andy’s Top 5 Lost Gems (now no longer lost)

  1. Vangelis – Blade Runner: This CD is an amazingly powerful synth masterpiece that I listened to probably 100 times in college.
  2. Cannonball Adderley – Mercy, Mercy, Mercy: a great, fun jazz album. My collection tends to be pretty Coltrane/Davis heavy. I wish I had more fun stuff like this, though.
  3. Kylie Minogue – Fever: Can’t Get You Out Of My Head is an amazing track. There are some other good ones on here, too. Disco = cheezy fun!
  4. Autechre – Tri Repetae++: Autechre before they went off the deep end into unlistenability.
  5. Beastie Boys – Check Your Head: Much love for all the tracks on here. My personal fave has to be Professor Booty, simply for the first 20 seconds.

    1. I am both very hesitant and very eager to hear this…I am always so hot and cold with early synth work.

    2. Haven’t listened to Cannonrun Adderley yet, but Soulive and Galactic are some fun, funky fusion options (but from 30 years later). There’s an album on OiNK of CA with Coltrane…best of both worlds?

    3. I like Gondry’s video for ‘Come Into My World,’ but other than that, I never really listened to much Minogue. I always kind of equated her with Britney, but then again, Brit Pop is always better than the American variety.

    4. I haven’t listened to any Autechre in a loooong time. I’m ready for another go. I remember buying Tri Repetae++ way back when…ah, my first ambient/IDM album. Or maybe Selected Works 85-92 was first? I got them both at Coconuts- that I remember.

    5. What a classic. I mean, it’s no License To Ill though B^)

I challenge you to listen to:
    Geinoh Yamashirogumi – Akira OST
    Sabrepulse – Chipbreak Wars
    Wes Montgomery – Movin’ Wes
    Yoshida Brothers – III
    Fingathing – The Main Event

Thx for your 5 picks… already have #1 and 5, will listen to them again, and try to get the other three.
