Track Day

Went to the track yesterday. My co-worker Jesse is a member of the local BMW car club, and they were having a track day at Portland International Raceway (PIR). I was just going to go and see the cool cars go fast but a guy there had an extra helmet (I need a big helmet) and so I was able to ride along in Jesse’s ’87 Mazda RX7 with him. Jesse had taken his 328 to the track on many occasions, but this was the first time with the RX7, which I understand can hold its own at the track, and that he had acquired solely for use on the track.

I don’t have any pics from in the car, since I was holding on with both hands. 🙂 I think all of us have gone fast in our car on the highway, but it is COMPLETELY DIFFERENT going around a track’s curves in a car.

Jesse was still getting used to his new track car so we weren’t going that fast. However, on lap 3, the brakes faded, and that led to a sequence of events that ended with us leaving the track in a great cloud of smoke and bounding across the grass infield! The car suffered only some minor damage to the undercarriage and little bits of grass were sprinkled about the interior. Due to the dodgy brakes we took it in for evaluation anyways. Apparently such occurances are not rare but was still quite something to experience.

The consensus of the gathered crowd of auto enthusiasts was that the brake lines needed to be bled. I was unfamiliar with this procedure, but it turned out to be pretty easy. We added new brake fluid (under the hood) and then worked the brake pedal to move it thorough the brake lines until the bypass valves at the wheels no longer contained any air or squirted out old fluid.

By then it was getting past the time I needed to leave, so I took off. But I took some good pics of the assembled cars. There were a HELL of a lot of Porches, as well as BMW M3s, and a smattering of other street cars. Some notable cars were three Lotus Elises, very nice, as well as a Noble kit car and a new Porche GT3. This is Jesse’s car. Here’s a shot of some cars on the track.

Mr. Grover goes to Washington

Hello class,

I went to Washington D.C. last weekend.

It was very nice.

We went to the . There were no cameras allowed inside, but there was a lot of old furniture and pictures of past (p)residents.

We went to the . I didn’t know it but the original Supreme Court was here: . Greg and I stood at the center of the capitol, for no good reason: . Then we saw the and also Superman:

We also went to the current !!! Greg highlights the invisible Justices!

The next day, we went and saw the and the s and s at the Air and Space Museum. We saw a 3D movie about the International Space Station narrated by .

Finally we went to the zoo and saw the and the giant s.

Finally we all went back to Dupont Circle and embraced .

But seriously, it was great to hang out with Greg and Amy, and go out with them and Ro, and watch movies, etc. I also got to see where Amy works (Ron Wyden (D – OR)’s office) and things of that nature.

Need some wood?

The tree came down.

I must say I find the hulking remains of this wonderful tree somewhat of a downer. But it was for the best. Really. It was only a matter of time.

Once I split the wood (anyone wanna help?) and redo the back yard, it will be much better. I plan to plant 1, maybe 2, trees to make up for this one.

I sure am going to miss that tree and the shade it provided.

some real-life HL

This one is for everyone out there who’s ever played Half-Life.

before
Before.

equip crowbar, Gordon Freeman-style
Oh yes. CROWBAR

after. the carnage
After.

Damn that was fun.

(This is all in preparation for the tree coming down tomorrow. One post to CL and all that firewood disappeared, too.)

how about that

LJ is back up!

Today I’ve been doing nothing because there was an ice storm last night and the whole city is shut down. I walked down to the corner convenience store, treading on the grass median instead of the pavement, since it was less slip-inducing.

I saw some really bad bands at Reed College last night. It was a Pick in the Willamette Week, so I decided to go. It was in the Reed College ping pong room and arcade. The first two bands only mildly sucked, but then Warbler consisted of two people with bullhorns yelling along to a PC playing mp3s. They’re from the Bay – they TRAVELLED here to perform. Wow. The last band was ear-bleedingly loud and at least they played instruments. They did so in spandex, even. They had it set up so everytime their drum machine hit the bass kick, one light would come on, every time the snare, another light would. Kinda cool for a while, but it got annoying. Thankfully, everyone’s sets were very short.

Anyways, I now have visited Reed and it certainly deserves its reputation. Everyone there was dressed like a hippie. Not that I have anything against hippies, but 100% hippies is nuts! If hippies were originally part of a counter-cultural movement, what do you call it when they completely dominate everything???

Resolutions

2) Get the house in shape (insulated, backyard etc.)

3) Start a regular exercise regimen

4) Visit at least 2 continents besides N.A.
